Mswakini
is located adjacent to the famous Tarangire game reserve and is home
to a large Masai population. The Mswakini School was started in 2001
as a pre-primary school serving the Masai of the area. The school
was originally made of mud and sticks; however, thanks to community
and government efforts, the school now consists of four cement block
classrooms and two offices hosting 368 students from pre-primary
through grade 5. The government supplies one textbook for every three
students, but does not provide any school supplies, such as stationery
or writing utensils. Each day, students are fed a mid-day meal of
porridge, which is cooked by one of the community parents.
With 368 students in only four classrooms, Mswakini Primary School is extremely overcrowded and in serious need of additional classrooms. The administration and community envision developing a complete pre–primary and primary school. They have planned to construct three additional classrooms, two additional latrines, a kitchen, cafeteria / community room, two additional staff houses, and to develop sports grounds.
Because the school is located in such a remote area, finances from the community are limited. OMEGA has agreed to partner with Mswakini to assist with the construction of the additional school buildings. OMEGA is encouraging the community to raise 10% while OMEGA raises 90% of the costs through donors and work teams. Below is a budget summary of the construction costs. If you are interested in partnering with OMEGA and Mswakini, please contact OMEGA for a detailed budget and proposal
